AT+T returns to self-branded phones with the Radiant Max - Android

It’s been a while since AT&T dipped into self-branded smartphones, but the carrier is eager to give them another shot. The company has introduced the AT&T Radiant Max, a budget Android phone aimed at prepaid customers.

It’s more than a no-frills device. The 6.5-inch “HD+” notched display is par for the course, but you do get 13MP, 5MP, and 2MP rear cameras. They allow you to get ultra-wide and macro photos along with night, portrait, and timelapse photo modes. There’s also promises of “louder, richer” DTS audio.

What to expect from the AT&T Radiant Max

Don’t expect many details for the performance, though. AT&T only mentions an “octa-core” processor, hinting that it’s using a low-end chip. You get a modest 32GB of expandable storage and a 4,000mAh battery the carrier claims can last for up to two whole days, although we wouldn’t be surprised if real-world use is less.

As you might imagine, the price is the real draw. The Radiant Max will arrive on August 28 for $130, or an even lower $80 if you’re a new customer signing up for an unlimited plan. This is for prepaid users who can’t justify spending more or don’t care for more than the basics.

To some degree, this is a competitor to T-Mobile’s Revvlry line. It’s also an acknowledgment that the phone market has changed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. People are buying lower-cost phones as a tough job market and a focus on essentials has led many to rethink their expenses. The Radiant Max may not be cutting-edge, but it still offers a modern smartphone experience that might cost less than some of your monthly bills.
