Android-powered Microsoft Surface Duo spotted in the wild for first time - Android

The device was spotted in action on the Vancouver SkyTrain, and the picture reveals something new.

The launch of Mircosoft’s new Android-powered device — the Microsoft Surface Duo — is just around the corner. Thankfully, we don’t need to wait until then to catch a glimpse of the device in the wild. Yesterday, an eagle-eyed commuter posted a picture of the device in action on Twitter.

The Microsoft Surface Duo was spotted in the hands of someone riding the Vancouver, Canada SkyTrain. Unfortunately, we don’t see the device in its entirety, but there is one possible difference between this device and the prototype unveiled in October — a front-facing flash.

The Twitter user claims they took other photos and videos, but this is all we could get our hands on at this point. Though it isn’t much, the addition of a new front-facing flash could mean several things. Most notably, it probably means the Microsoft Surface Duo won’t come with a dedicated rear camera. Instead, users will most likely need to fold the device with the front-facing camera outward to snap a picture.

This isn’t a huge surprise since the prototype we saw a few months ago also did not have a dedicated rear camera. It just further cements the likelihood of a dual-purpose sensor. Let’s just hope Microsoft will include a camera that performs well in both front- and rear-facing camera scenarios.

We expect to see more leaks and pictures of the Microsoft Surface Duo out in the open as the device launch draws nearer.
