Chrome is providing an update that will users avoid those stubborn webpage notification requests.

With the Chrome 80 update, the browser on desktop and mobile users will be able to hide the notification request automatically. Instead of the blaring notification, it’ll show an icon saying that it has been blocked with a small message informing the user.

With a tap, you’ll be able to enable the request. The blue bar will only appear the first time you enable the feature.

By default, Chrome will not enable this feature, and users will have to go into the new “quieter messaging” options in the setting to turn it on. For those who often block these notifications, this feature will be enabled automatically when Google rolls out the stable update to Chrome.

Currently, this option is available in the Beta, Dev and Canary versions of Chrome and can be turned on with the flag: chrome://flags/#quiet-notification-prompts.

Additionally, sites with low acceptance rates will also get automatically ignored. Once their acceptance rates improve, the website will get unrolled in the quieter prompts.

Further, Google will release additional enforcement against abusive sites: “later in 2020, we plan to enable additional enforcement against abusive websites using web notifications for ads, malware or deceptive purposes. This enforcement will be described in detail in a future blog post.”
