Google announces new Camera Go app as Android Go devices pass 100m mark - Android

Google's Android Go platform is continually growing in both global usage and app ecosystem capabilities.

Today, Google made two exciting announcements. Android Go now officially has more than 100 million users, and the company will soon release a new Camera Go app.

Google’s Camera Go will launch on the recently announced Nokia 1.3, with support for more Android Go devices to follow. The app promises to help low-storage devices take high-quality photos without hogging up all of their internal storage.

It features a portrait mode, a clean and simple interface, and it will even track how much photo and video storage is available on the device. Google also claims Camera Go will help the user clear up space on their device, so they don’t run out of storage unexpectedly.

The Camera Go app is optimized for devices with 1GB of RAM, and it will not support HDR+ or Night Sight. We don’t expect Night Sight to ever land in the Camera Go app, though, as Google likely wants to keep this feature a Pixel-exclusive.

The company also announced that the Android Go operating system now officially has more than 100 million users. More than 900,000 of these devices are used by people across Kenya thanks to its partnership with Safaricom — Kenya’s largest telecom provider.

What’s more, 53% of Android Go users are women. This was made possible thanks to Safaricom’s “Life is Digital” campaign. Google says this is a respectable achievement since sub-Saharan Africa has a significant gender gap in regards to mobile internet usage.

All in all, there are more than 1,600 different Android Go devices available in nearly 190 countries. Google is constantly developing its Android Go ecosystem to make mobile computing accessible to more people around the globe. The addition of the Camera Go app is just the next step in the bigger picture.
