You don’t have to take advantage of Amazon Prime Day to find a good deal on a smart speaker. Google’s Nest Mini is on sale for $30 (down from $49) at several stores, including Best Buy, Walmart, Target, B&H, and the Google Store.
The Nest Mini is more than a little familiar if you’ve seen the Home Mini, but don’t let external appearances fool you. The current model delivers surprisingly good sound for the money, responds quickly to your commands, and even has a notch to hang on the wall. About our only complaint was the too-short power cable with a proprietary connector. The Nest Mini is a good entry point into the Google Assistant ecosystem at its normal price, let alone on sale.
There are alternatives, although they may not be as compelling depending on what you’re willing to pay. Amazon’s fourth-generation Echo Dot potentially sounds better if you’re willing to pay more (as of this writing). And as good as the Nest Mini sounds, you might want to skip the sale and spend more on a higher-quality device like the Google Nest Audio or regular Echo.

You can listen to music with a Nest Mini, but that’s not its star attraction. Instead, it’s more more of a smart home control device that happens to play music well in a pinch. If that sounds like the right device, you’ll want to take advantage of the deal while you can.
