The Google Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL have endured their fair share of criticism since launch, but there’s no denying the search giant has crafted a great pair of phones once again. In addition to the amazing camera and software, Google’s latest duo have also drawn plaudits for the “Smooth Display” screen tech which supports a silky smooth 90Hz refresh rate.

Our verdict

In order to balance out the extra power drain from the increased refresh rate, the Pixel 4 dynamically switches between 90Hz and a more standard 60Hz depending on the content being displayed — usually everyday tasks like making calls or using non-optimized apps.

However, if you’re a 90Hz addict you’re in luck as there is a way to force 90Hz refresh rate on Google Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL with just a few simple steps. We should note that this will demand a lot of power from your phone and will drain your battery at a much faster rate — which is potentially quite problematic as the Pixel 4 series already has quite mediocre battery life.

Unlike some phones with higher refresh rate displays like the OnePlus 7T, you don’t have to wrestle with adb commands to force the max refresh rate on the Google Pixel 4. Instead, you just have to jump into the phone’s Developer options. You can read about how to do that here, or follow the step-by-step guide below:

  1. Open Settings > About phone
  2. Scroll down to Build number and tap on it five times.
  3. If you have a PIN lock you will need to enter it to enable Developer options.
  4. Now go to Settings > System > Advanced > Developer options.
  5. Scroll down to Debugging and the penultimate setting Force 90Hz refresh rate.
  6. Tap Force 90Hz refresh rate and hit the toggle to enable it.

That’s it, now you can enjoy all those extra frames!
