Huawei has reportedly shipped 12 million Mate 30 phones, but where - Android

Shipping 12 million units in just 100 days is pretty damn good. However, how many of those are outside China?

According to a report from the Chinese technology site Sina Mobile, Huawei has shipped over 12 million devices from its latest line of flagships, the Huawei Mate 30 series. This would include the Mate 30, Mate 30 Pro, the 5G variants of those two devices, and the Mate 30 RS Porsche Design.

Huawei revealed at an event in November that it had shipped 7 million units of the Mate 30 series after just 60 days. If this 12 million figure is true, that means Huawei shipped 5 million more Mate 30 devices within the past month.

Unfortunately, Sina doesn’t divulge where Huawei shipped these devices. Considering the Mate 30 series hasn’t received any prominent global launches outside of China, it’s a safe bet to assume that the bulk of those 12 million units were shipped within Huawei’s home country.

Additionally, shipment numbers aren’t equivalent to sales numbers. Although Chinese citizens are used to buying smartphones without Google apps on board, it would be interesting to see how many devices in the Huawei Mate 30 series the company has actually sold outside of China. Our guess is not too many.

The next set of flagship releases from Huawei will be the devices in the Huawei P40 series, which the company confirmed earlier this month. However, it is very unlikely those devices will come with Google apps on board. Although Huawei is proving it can handle itself without Google as a partner, it likely won’t be able to hold onto its second-place status around the world — much less overtake Samsung to be number one — if it can’t get the Huawei ban under control.

The Mate 30 Pro very likely would have been voted as one of the best Android phones of the year in our annual Best of Android series. Without Google apps on board, though, the device didn’t make the cut.
