It looks like the OnePlus 8 series marks the end of Oxygen OS’ Shelf feature - Android

The Shelf feature is likely getting replaced by Google Discover.

If you are using the Oxygen OS launcher on your OnePlus phone, a swipe to the right of your main home screen will show you the OnePlus Shelf feature. However, the new OnePlus 8 series of phones appear to do away with Shelf, and that could mean the end of the feature for other phones, too.

In place of the OnePlus Shelf feature on the OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro is the Google Discover feed. This is a much more ubiquitous service that performs many of the same features as Shelf, so it makes a lot of sense for OnePlus to let Google do the work from now on.

If you don’t like Google Discover, you have the option to turn the feature off in Android settings on the OnePlus 8. However, there doesn’t appear to be a way to choose between OnePlus Shelf or Google Discover — it’s either Discover or nothing.

This isn’t the first time that Shelf has been abandoned on a OnePlus phone. The OnePlus 6T, OnePlus 7 Pro, and OnePlus 7T devices sold through T-Mobile also had Google Discover instead of the OnePlus Shelf feature. However, the OnePlus 8 series represents the first time the feature has been abandoned on unlocked, non-carrier versions of the company’s devices.

It’s a safe bet that future Oxygen OS updates for older OnePlus phones will also abandon Shelf in favor of Discover. It’s probably just a matter of time, at this point.
