The long-awaited OnePlus Watch has been “postponed,” according to tipster Max J citing “multiple sources.”
The news comes after initial rumors that OnePlus was thawing its frozen wearable project this year. The company then confirmed the Watch’s existence in an official teaser just prior to the OnePlus 8T‘s launch. It didn’t provide a concrete launch date, but judging by the timing, it was believed that the wearable would launch alongside the year-end flagship. This didn’t materialize.
While it remains unclear when the smartwatch will make its debut, it doesn’t seem that OnePlus has permanently put its plans on ice.
The OnePlus Watch was initially conceived in 2016, but the project was canned due to unfavorable market conditions at the time. Despite the delay, it seems an excellent time for OnePlus to join its BBK stablemates in the wearable market. While a premium OnePlus Watch may find it challenging competing with lower-cost fitness trackers, there’s clearly consumer hunger for health monitoring wearables during the pandemic.
As for specs, we know little about the Watch itself bar its likely design. OnePlus’ teasers suggest the wearable will wear a circular face akin to the Vivo Watch. Unlike its sibling, we do hope it also packs a swift chipset and Wear OS, too.
