Update, January 13, 2020 (01:26AM ET): OnePlus CEO Pete Lau has confirmed that the company has developed a 120Hz display. Lau took to Chinese social media website Weibo to make the announcement in advance of a screen technology event scheduled to take place in China today.

In his Weibo post, Lau said that OnePlus has completed its research on 120Hz displays. However, he didn’t give out any details about OnePlus phones that would get the high refresh rate display. We haven’t heard any solid rumors about the upcoming OnePlus 8 series sporting the 120Hz display refresh rate. Maybe OnePlus is reserving the tech for its flagship smartphones due to launch in the second half of the year.

Guess, we’ll just have to wait for more details to emerge from OnePlus’ screen technology event.

Original Article, January 10, 2020 (06:30PM ET): A post on Chinese social media site Weibo (via 9to5Google) has revealed that OnePlus is prepping to unveil some mysterious new screen technology. The company sent out press invites to a January 13 event about its recent display developments, but it doesn’t give us any official information about what we will see.

At CES 2020, OnePlus showed off the OnePlus Concept One, a concept device featuring electrochromic glass to hide the rear-facing cameras. We don’t suspect this upcoming event will have anything to do with this tech, but it’s interesting to see the company make two announcements like this within the same month.

We suspect OnePlus will most likely announce the inclusion of 120Hz panels in its future devices. We’ve already heard rumors that the upcoming OnePlus 8 Pro could come with this high refresh rate display, so it’s within reason to believe the company could unveil the tech soon.

We could also see under-display front-facing camera tech as we’ve recently seen from Oppo, but a 120Hz panel seems more likely. In the end, all of this is just speculation until OnePlus releases more information.

What do you think? Will OnePlus’ new screen technology be higher refresh rate displays, or do you think it will unveil something totally different? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
