Oppo shows off AR Glass, 5G, and under-screen selfie cameras at Inno Day 2019 - Android

All the highlights from Oppo's annual tech showcase.

The Oppo AR Glass.

Oppo held its Inno Day in Shenzhen, China today, showcasing a variety of technologies. But probably the biggest surprise was its AR Glass headset.

AR Glass, as the name implies, delivers augmented reality features in a pair of HoloLens-like glasses. The AR-enabled glasses tout a fairly bulky design, primarily due to the thick forehead. Check it out in the image below:

The Oppo AR Glass.

AR Glass packs three cameras (two fish-eye lenses and a normal camera), a 3D reconstruction feature (presumably letting you scan objects), 3D surround sound, and hand-tracking.

Further information about the headset wasn’t forthcoming, but it’ll allow you to consume AR content and games. It’s unclear if Oppo will be running its own store to supply said apps and games.

The Oppo 5G CPE box.

The company also announced a 5G CPE, powered by the X55 modem (also seen with the Snapdragon 865). The X55 supports both mmWave and sub-6Ghz 5G, so we can assume that the Oppo 5G CPE offers this support too.

Both the AR Glass and 5G CPE are expected to land in Q1 2020, although a specific launch date or release market wasn’t specified. Oppo added that it also intends to launch its first smartwatches and smart wireless headphones in Q1 next year.

The Chinese brand also gave us another look at its under-screen camera technology (seen above), placing a selfie camera under the screen for a full-screen experience. The area above the sensor looks a little hazy when displaying content, but it certainly represents a big step away from waterdrop notches, punch holes, and pop-up cameras.

We don’t know when to expect a commercially available Oppo phone with an under-screen camera, but the likes of  Samsung previously confirmed work in this area too.

Would you buy a phone with an under-screen camera? Let us know in the comments!
