Redmi K30 5G apparently capable of 144Hz display refresh rate - Android

Keep in mind, though, that the Redmi K30 5G has an IPS LCD display, not an OLED display.

Today, on Chinese micro-blogging site Weibo, Redmi executive Lu Weibing shared a video depicting a Redmi K30 5G achieving a display refresh rate of 144Hz. The 15-seconds-long video is mirrored on YouTube, which we’ve embedded above.

According to Google Translate, Mr. Weibing uses the word “tuned” in his post on the matter, while other sources are interpreting his statement as “tested.” Either way, it does not appear that the Redmi K30 5G is going to officially launch with a 144Hz display refresh rate. Redmi is likely just doing this to show it is possible.

Interestingly, the previous version in the Redmi K series, the Redmi K20 Pro (a.k.a. the Xiaomi Mi 9T Pro), was also capable of a higher refresh rate than its native 60Hz. Over at XDA Developers, modders were able to get the K20 Pro up to 75Hz, with 90Hz being theoretically possible. However, battery life suffered the higher the refresh rate went.

With that in mind, it’s likely that there would be too much battery drainage for the Redmi K30 5G with a 144Hz display refresh rate. Instead, we expect it to have a 120Hz refresh rate as Redmi previously revealed.

It should be noted that the Redmi K30 5G will come with an IPS LCD display, not an OLED panel. We’ve already seen plenty of 120Hz display refresh rates on LCD panels, such as the one on the Razer Phone from all the way back in 2017. The 90Hz display refresh rates on the OnePlus 7T and Google Pixel 4 are generally considered to be of a higher quality because of their OLED design. The 120Hz refresh rate displays expected on the OnePlus 8 and Samsung Galaxy S20 series will also likely be superior to the rate on the Redmi K30 5G.
