Samsung is one of the largest companies in the world. It manufactures anything from smartphones, wireless earbuds, and smartwatches to home appliances, laptops, and tablets. Though the company has dabbled in virtual reality, one thing the company hasn’t released yet is purely augmented reality equipment. According to a recently published design patent, that might change in the future.
The patent shows the general construction of an AR headset Samsung might be working on. The company applied for the patent this February, but it wasn’t published until a couple days ago.
According to the patent, the Samsung AR headset features a metal and synthetic resin build. There is a cable connected to the right side of the device, and the lenses are made of glass. The headset also looks like it will sport two forward-facing cameras and two projectors — one for each eye.
Just because a patent was filed doesn’t mean Samsung is actively developing this headset. The patent also doesn’t tell us anything about the technology powering the device or where that cable leads. It could be another unknown device, a computer, or even a smartphone. We will have to wait for Samsung to release official information before we know for sure.
Samsung hasn’t released a new VR headset since 2017, so a new product in the virtual/augmented reality space would be nice to see.
