Sprint to shut down Virgin Mobile USA, migrate customers to Boost Mobile - Android

Sprint will migrate existing Virgin Mobile USA customers over to its sister MVNO, Boost Mobile, starting next month.

In light of its impending T-Mobile merger, Sprint has decided to close up shop at Virgin Mobile USA. Sprint isn’t going to leave subscribers high and dry, though. Starting next month, it will migrate existing Virgin Mobile USA customers over to its sister MVNO, Boost Mobile.

This comes as no surprise to us. Last July, we got word that Dish was planning to swoop in and purchase some of Sprint’s spectrum after the merger to make the proposal pass more easily. That sale would include both Boost Mobile and Virgin Mobile USA properties, so this early migration is most likely preemptive action to make that process run smoother. With Virgin Mobile USA consolidating into Boost Mobile, now Sprint, T-Mobile, and Dish are all one step closer to a happy ending.

What this means for existing Virgin Mobile USA customers

Virgin Mobile USA will notify customers early this month, and users should be able to retain their existing or similarly priced accounts once transferred to Boost Mobile. Since Boost and Virgin utilize the same network, customers shouldn’t notice much of a change as far as connectivity is concerned, and they will be able to keep their same numbers and mobile devices.

Unfortunately, Virgin Mobile USA customers accustomed to paying for their service via PayPal will no longer be able to do so. According to Virgin Mobile USA’s FAQs, “paying for your service through your PayPal account will not be supported” starting four to five days before the migration.

Note, this migration will not affect the greater Virgin Mobile brand. So, if you are a Virgin Mobile customer outside of the US, nothing should change with your current provider.
