We’ve seen infrared cameras on phones before, allowing you to take infrared snaps and videos. But it looks like Honor is using infrared technology in a different way on its upcoming device.
The Huawei sub-brand has confirmed on Weibo (h/t: MyDrivers) that its upcoming Honor Play 4 series will offer an infrared camera that can be used to measure temperature.
Honor says the temperature measurement feature works with objects, animals, and people, but it’s the latter that has our attention. Being able to measure someone’s temperature is especially important during the COVID-19 pandemic, and an official video clip shows us how it works. Check out the first 30 seconds of the video below.
It seems like users simply have to hold the phone over the person’s body rather than having the phone actually touch the person in question.
It’s unclear whether the infrared camera and temperature measurement feature will appear on all Honor Play 4 series phones or only one. Nevertheless, this seems like one of the more practical features on a smartphone given today’s global situation. And if it works properly, we could see it being handy for essential workers on the frontline of the coronavirus pandemic.
The Honor Play 4 family is set for a reveal tomorrow (June 3), so check back then for more details. Otherwise, you can check out more Huawei/Honor coverage below.
