This week in Apple - 2020 iPhones could have big batteries, Mac Pro now on sale - Android

If you're an iPhone user, next year's phones could have (slightly) bigger batteries, thanks to new designs.

This week in Apple news we learned that the 2020 iPhones could have bigger batteries. While Android devices usually have much bigger batteries than those included with iPhones, Apple’s software does make the battery life last pretty long. In 2020, though, iPhones could get a sizable bump in battery capacity, making them even better at holding a charge.

Elsewhere, we heard about the new Mac Pro finally going on sale, Apple’s return to the Consumer Electronics Show after decades away, and a rogue industry analyst who says that the iPhone 11 Pro lineup isn’t selling well.

See the Apple news roundup below for all the latest.

The top Apple news stories of the past week:

  • 2020 iPhone lineup could have much bigger batteries: According to “industry sources” (take that as you will), the lineup of 2020 iPhones could have a custom battery protection module that is significantly smaller and thinner than in previous iPhones. This could result in more internal space in future iPhones, leaving room for more battery.
  • Mac Pro and the ridiculously expensive display are on sale: Apple launched the new “cheese grater” Mac Pro back in June but it just now is finally available for you to actually buy. A Mac Pro with maxed-out specs will set you back nearly $60,000, and the ultra-high-end Apple Pro Display XDR monitor will set you back another $5,000, at a minimum. If you want to prop that monitor on a stand, that will cost you another $1,000. Yes, really.
  • Apple will return to CES after decades away: Although Apple put up a big ol’ ad at CES 2019, it hasn’t actually had a presence at the event since 1992. That changes in 2020 with Jane Horvath, Apple’s senior director of privacy, attending a roundtable to discuss — you guessed it — privacy.
  • Rogue analyst says iPhone 11 Pro isn’t doing well: Although most industry analysts would describe iPhone 11 sales as strong and healthy, one rogue analyst doesn’t agree. According to Rosenblatt analyst Jun Zhang, Apple is cutting iPhone 11 Pro production by 25% because people only want 5G phones. Our eyes can’t roll back far enough for this.
  • However, that analyst isn’t completely wrong: While the idea that the iPhone 11 Pro isn’t doing well globally is pretty absurd, there is one market where it definitely isn’t doing well: China. According to esteemed brokerage Credit Suisse, Apple’s iPhone shipments in China fell more than 35% in November, marking their second straight double-digit decline. Time for a new China strategy, Apple.
  • Apple’s new acquisition could make iPhone photos better: According to public filings in the United Kingdom, Apple acquired a UK-based startup with technology that improves photos taken on smartphones. A corporate lawyer at Apple took control of Spectral Edge, Ltd. and the rest of the company’s advisors and board members were terminated. Ouch.
