This week in Apple - iPhone SE 2 could land in 2020, look like iPhone 8 - Android

Apparently, Apple's 2020 iPhone strategy could be wildly different from the usual.

The big Apple news this week relates to rumors about the upcoming cheaper entry into the iPhone lineup, colloquially referred to for now as the iPhone SE 2. The device should be even cheaper than the iPhone 11 and the iPhone XR and land at some point in Q1 2020.

We also have some news about displays on the upcoming iPads and MacBook Pros, a scheduled Apple earnings call, and a short film shot on the iPhone 11 Pro by none other than Rian Johnson.

See the Apple news roundup below for all the latest.

The top Apple news stories of the past week:

  • iPhone SE 2 could land in Q1 2020: According to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple could launch a new, cheaper iPhone in the first quarter of next year. We’re calling it the iPhone SE 2 for now, but it could be something different. Kuo says it will look a lot like the iPhone 8 (shown above) but have upgraded RAM (3GB) and the A13 processor.
  • Apple could shift iPad Pro and MacBook Pro to Mini-LED displays: Right now, OLED displays are considered top-of-the-line. In the future though, Mini-LED could be what the big brands use for ultra-premium products, and Apple might be on board with that, according to Ming-Chi Kuo. This would be advantageous to Apple as it would finally limit its reliance on Samsung for display technology.
  • Apple’s fiscal Q4 2019 earnings call scheduled: Apple will have its fiscal Q4 2019 (covering Q3 2019) call on October 30, 2019. During this call, we’ll learn a lot about new products, revenue, and other business-related topics. We won’t likely hear about iPhone sales, though, as Apple has apparently stopped divulging that info.
  • iPhone 11 production increased due to solid demand: Speaking of iPhone sales, according to Nikkei Asian Review, Apple has requested its suppliers ramp up production for iPhone 11 components due to strong demand. Reportedly, Apple wants 10% more units than expected.
  • Star Wars director shoots a short film on iPhone 11 Pro: Rian Johnson — who directed Star Wars: The Last Jedi — grabbed a new iPhone 11 Pro and used it to shoot a short film. Unlike other “shot on iPhone” films, Johnson didn’t use any other gear for the shoot: it’s just the iPhone held in his hands. Watch the film here.
