We asked, you told us - You’re really split about what the OnePlus 8T should be - Android

OnePlus has confirmed that the OnePlus 8T is coming next month, penning an October 14 reveal date for the latest flagship. Unfortunately, it’s rumored that the OnePlus 8T won’t be joined by a Pro model.

This would mark the first time since 2018’s OnePlus 6T that we don’t see a Pro model alongside a standard OnePlus flagship. This got us wondering about the possible route OnePlus could take with the upcoming phone.

Could the company make the OnePlus 8T a more premium device in line with the Pro phones? Would the phone go for the more affordable route as we’ve seen with other vanilla variants? We put this question to Android Authority readers, and here’s what they thought.

What should OnePlus do with the OnePlus 8T?

Results

We published our poll on September 7, and over 4,500 readers took part in it. The results show that a slim majority of readers (52.4%) want OnePlus to make the OnePlus 8T a more premium offering akin to the Pro models. The OnePlus 8 Pro is unarguably the apex of this approach, offering wireless charging, water resistance, a 120Hz QHD+ OLED screen, and a telephoto rear camera.

Almost 48% of respondents veered in the other direction, saying they want to see a more affordable device in line with previous vanilla models. The standard OnePlus 8 is the most recent example of this, lacking wireless charging and a telephoto camera while topping out at a 90Hz FHD+ OLED display. But the phone had a launch price of $699 compared to the OnePlus 8 Pro’s $899 launch price.

For what it’s worth, Android Central reports that the OnePlus 8T will have a 120Hz OLED screen, but a gimped rear camera setup. In the case of the latter, it’s believed that the phone will offer a 48MP primary camera, 16MP ultra-wide shooter, 5MP macro lens, and a 2MP portrait camera. So those hoping for the Pro’s 48MP ultra-wide camera or a telephoto lens might be disappointed.

• Jim Gunn: I think they need to move back to a flat screen. I’ve been put off buying a OnePlus phone for the last 2 years because the high end models had a curved screen. I’m still on the 6t. I forget what prevented me buying the 7 but there was something lacking compared to the pro and the pro had a curved screen so that was a no go. Soon time to switch brands I think.
• Zu En Seow: Perhaps making Pro a once-a-year occurrence night do some good.
• Demongornot: “What do you think OnePlus should do with the OnePlus 8T?” Bring back the Jack and the Pop up along with giving it a flat display, like all phones should have.
• Low Budget Tech Guy: Too many phones coming out too often. At least the old cadence of 3/3T/5/5T/6/6T was steady and limited. It allowed them to focus on the software instead of what hardware changes to make next. Adding a Pro to that two/year cadence upped the number of models, complicated the software, etc. That’s how the OP3 ended up with the support life it did – it was nearly identical to the 3T. Made it much easier to include support for. Ditto 5/5T.
• Bojan Radovanović: Why won’t there be Pro model? Is it because no one wants to give 1000€ for Oneplus phone!?
