Welp - Android 11 won’t have scrolling screenshot support after all (Updated) - Android

Google confirmed the news in a Reddit AMA earlier today.

Update: July 9, 2020 at 4:20 PM ET: It’s now early July, and we’re nearing closer to the official Android 11 release date. We’ve seen a lot of changes go through each one of the developer previews so far, but one feature apparently didn’t end up making the cut.

During a Reddit AMA today, Google’s Dan Saddler confirmed scrolling screenshots won’t be in the final Android 11 release.

We’re still working on it, but It didn’t make the cut for R.
Rather than cranking out a quick hack that works for one or two hand-picked apps on a particular device, our goal on the platform team is to build this in a way that _any_ app can plug into, whether they’re using a bog-standard RecyclerView or have implemented their own OpenGL-accelerated scrolling engine. We investigated this throughout the R timeline, involving folks from the window manager and System UI teams; you’ll be able to see this scrolling capture framework start to take shape in the AOSP source.
In the end, as with every Android release (and especially in this unusual year), we had to make hard choices about where to focus our limited resources; while this is a cool feature that we’re still really excited about, we decided not to rush it. Look for it in a future API bump.

Original article: February 19, 2020 at 5:30 PM ET: Samsung, LG, and other Android OEMs are often the first companies to release new features into Android. Later on, there’s a pretty good chance Google will add these features into vanilla Android if they prove to be useful or popular enough.

One feature everyone has been clamoring for over the years has been scrolling screenshots. On Samsung, Huawei, and other OEM phones, you can take a screenshot and continue to scroll down in order to capture the entire page. It’s pretty awesome.

In Android 11, it looks like Google is finally prepping to enable scrolling screenshots.

XDA Developers

Even if you have the first Android 11 developer preview installed, you probably won’t be able to test this new feature out for yourself. Our friends at XDA Developers were able to get the feature up and running after manually enabling it. In fact, the feature doesn’t even work yet — tapping the “Extend” prompt after taking a screenshot resulted in a pop-up that read “Not implemented!”

We’ll likely see this feature surface in a later developer preview or beta build.
