Xiaomi wants to one-up OnePlus with 120Hz display, impressive cameras - Android

Xiaomi looks like it will soon offer devices with 120Hz high refresh rate displays and some very impressive camera specs.

Several OEMs have pitted their best against one another in a fight to provide the best high refresh rate devices. Now, Xiaomi wants a piece of the action too. The Chinese based tech company looks like it will be swinging for the fences with a device featuring an all-out 120Hz display. Oh, and it’s throwing in possibly another device with a camera that supports up to 50x digital zoom and 8K video recording at 30fps for good measure.

Companies such as OnePlus, Oppo, and Asus have all released high refresh rate devices this year. And though we can’t confirm it yet, Google’s latest Pixel device will most likely also join that club in a couple of weeks with a 90Hz display refresh rate.

Xiaomi, on the other hand, is known for its mid-range and budget devices. But don’t let the company’s past fool you. According to XDA Developers, Xiaomi will be releasing some premium-grade high refresh rate display tech in a future device.

Apparently, Xiaomi added support for high refresh rate displays into its latest MIUI 11 beta settings. The setting will let users toggle between two refresh rates. A higher option will allow for a smoother picture, and a lower one will alleviate battery consumption. Xiaomi designed it to support 60Hz and 120Hz displays, indicating one of Xiaomi’s upcoming flagships could support the two options.

Xiaomi’s latest MIUI camera app reveals some exciting developments, too. XDA Developers also noticed that Xiaomi is preparing to launch a smartphone that supports 8K recording at 30fps. The app will also support 5x optical and 50x digital zoom modes. We don’t know any of the technical details or which sensor Xiaomi plans to develop these features on top of.

No one knows if there is one device that will sport all of these features or if the company will disperse them across several entries. No matter what, it’s exciting to see Xiaomi pushing boundaries, especially on the camera and display fronts.
