Yahoo readying MVNO with $40 unlimited plan (there’s a catch though) - Android

Yahoo is a shadow of its former self these days, but the brand is preparing to launch a brand-new MVNO powered by parent company Verizon.

Android Police spotted the Yahoo Mobile website, revealing that the operator uses Verizon’s LTE network and is offering a $40 a month plan. This plan delivers unlimited talking, texting, and mobile data. Unlimited data comes with the caveat that your speeds might slow down due to congestion, although they claim not to throttle your connection based on usage.

The website also notes that tethering is limited to 5Mbps and one device at a time. But otherwise, the brand says you should expect download speeds of between five and 12Mbps, and upload speeds of roughly two to 5Mbps.

The big catch is that signing up with Yahoo Mobile requires a Yahoo account, and I can’t imagine loads of people will be eager to sign up for a new Yahoo account following a high profile data breach in 2016. Got a Yahoo account anyway and want to get in on the action? Well, the operator is also dishing out free access to Yahoo Mail Pro (ad-free email and 1TB of storage) and Yahoo Account Pro tech support with the plan.

Nevertheless, the MVNO also offers a number of phones if you’d like one with a plan. Devices listed by the company include Apple’s iPhone family, the Google Pixel range, Motorola phones, and Samsung‘s various devices. The firm is also offering various pre-owned phones if you’re on a budget and don’t mind.

What do you think of Yahoo Mobile’s plan and strategy? Give us your thoughts below.
