How to remove (or add) the Google Stadia controller prompt on Chromecast Ultra - Android

Here's how to remove the Stadia controller prompt from your Chromecast Ultra and regain screen real estate.

How to remove Google Stadia Controller Chromecast Ultra text

A recent update made any Chromecast Ultra compatible with Google Stadia, which is great news for Stadia fans looking to play on a second screen, but not such good news for everyone else. This is because it adds a prompt to the Chromecast Ultra ambient screen to pair a Stadia controller, partially covering the images it displays.

Even if you do have Stadia, you might still want to remove the Stadia Controller prompt because once you pair your controller there’s no need to ever pair it again. In order to gain back that screen real estate, you’ll need to fiddle with a few settings on the Chromecast Ultra itself.

The good news is that it only takes a moment and can be done from any smartphone connected to the same Google Home network. Here are the steps:

How to remove/add the Stadia controller prompt on Chromecast Ultra

  1. Open the Google Home app on your smartphone.
  2. Select your Chromecast Ultra from the list of devices.
  3. Tap the three dots at the top right and select Ambient mode settings.
  4. Scroll down to Stadia Controller linking code and toggle Hide/Show.

That’s all there is to it! If you want to pair a new Stadia controller to your Chromecast Ultra, just open the menu again and show the linking code temporarily. You can also unpair the controller via the Google Stadia app.

While you’ve got that menu open, you can also customize what your Chromecast Ultra displays when it’s inactive. Switch to your own Google Photos images, the default artwork, or even Flickr and Facebook feeds.

If you’re looking to make the most of Stadia, there’s also an option to automatically turn on your TV’s game mode when Stadia is active, although it won’t work on all television sets. All other Stadia settings for display quality and data usage are found in the official Google Stadia app.
