Redmi 8 to launch in India on October 9, flagship Sony camera sensor teased - Android

Xiaomi has confirmed that the Redmi 8 is coming, along with a launch event in the coming days.

Update October 4 2019  (5:30AM ET): Xiaomi’s India MD and Global VP, Manu Kumar Jain, has confirmed in a tweet that the company will indeed launch the Redmi 8 on October 9 in India. He has also teased a flagship-grade Sony camera sensor and a large battery on the phone.

As you can see, Jain says the camera sensor on the Redmi 8 is one that would usually be found on a Rs 20,000 (~ $281) phone. We’re not really sure of the sensor, but it could be the 12MP Sony IMX363 which was also seen on the recently released Redmi 8A. It’s also believed that there could be a Pro variant of the Redmi 8 with a 48MP camera. In that case, Xiaomi could use a Sony IMX586 sensor also found on the Redmi Note 7 Pro.

Further, a Google Play Console listing of the Redmi 8 has also been spotted by 91Mobiles. The listing suggests that the Redmi 8 will pack the Snapdragon 439 octa-core processor. The display resolution is set at 720 x 1,520 pixels. The phone is also listed with 3GB RAM, an Adreno 505 GPU, and Android 9 Pie.

Original Article October 3 2019 (10PM ET): Today, Xiaomi teased a new India-bound device on Twitter, and fans are chanting “Redmi 8.” Xiaomi launched the Redmi 8A in India only a few days ago, but not the standard model, so this is quite plausible.

The purported Redmi 8 launch day is October 9, a couple of weeks before India’s Diwali celebrations commence. Obviously, there is no way to know for sure if this is Redmi 8 or not. But given the demand and the not so subtle eight in the graphic, it’s a pretty safe assumption.

The only other guess we have is that this device could be the rumored Redmi 8A Pro. Historically, Xiaomi does not release Pro versions of it A series of devices, but apparently the 8A is special.

We will find out whether the teased device is the Redmi 8, 8A Pro, or both. Redmi fans should be excited for next week’s launch event regardless. Xiaomi often springs surprises and launches new product streams from time to time, so who knows what else it will unveil at the event.
