You gotta hand it to Sony: it just keeps on doing its thing. Despite massive problems in its mobile division, it is still trying to charge exorbitant prices for its handsets that don’t offer much more than competitors do. The newly-launched Sony Xperia 1 Professional Edition is no exception (via Droid Shout).

The device — which is exclusive to Japan at the moment — looks very much like the regular Sony Xperia 1 launched earlier this year. However, there are three notable upgrades.

The first and most impressive upgrade is the display. The Sony Xperia 1 Professional Edition has a 4K display that is HDR-ready with a BT2020 color gamut, and 10-bit signal support. You can also customize the color levels to your liking.

Additionally, the device comes with the Imaging Edge Mobile Transfer and Tagging add-on built-in. This works with Sony imaging software that improves photos taken on Sony cameras.

Finally, the Sony Xperia 1 Professional Edition is LAN-ready through its USB-C port. However, the required cable needed to make this work is not included in the box.

How much do you think these features are worth when you factor in that the vanilla edition of the Xperia 1 starts at $950? Maybe $50 more? Possibly $100 more on the high end?

How about $350 more?

That’s right, the Sony Xperia 1 Professional Edition starts at 143,000 Japanese yen (~$1,316). That’s more expensive than even the top-of-the-line Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Plus. It will hit store shelves in Japan on October 25. There’s no word yet on if the device will land in other countries.
